چکیده

Illusory contours are perceived in the absence of any real physical luminance gradients between inducers that are spatially discontinuous (Fig. 1a,b).1–3 It has been controversial whether the perception of these subjective contours arise from higher level cognitive mechanisms that depend on attention and serial search4–6 or from lower level parallel processing in the early automatic, preattentive stages of vision.7–9 In support of lower level processes, neurophysiological studies in monkeys showed that neurons in the visual cortex (areas V1 and V2) respond to illusory contours as well as to real contours of identical orientation.10,11 However, unlike subjective contours that are induced by offset gratings, Kanizsa-style illusory contours elicit responses only from V2 neurons and not from V1 neurons.11,12 Nevertheless, recent evidence suggests that even this type of subjective figure can be detected without focal attention or serial search.8 In patients with unilateral neglect who may fail to deploy attention to the contralesional side of space, Kanizsa-style illusory figures provide a special opportunity to investigate the role of attention in the perception of illusory contours. We carried out two experiments in neglect patients to investigate whether the spatial discontinuous inducers of Kanizsa figures might group together despite unilateral neglect and generate subjective filling-in of surfaces bounded by illusory contours; and whether the perception of illusory surfaces themselves might be dissociated from the explicit detection, or awareness, of their inducers. On the perception of illusory contours.

Illusory contours are invoked by the visual system to account for otherwise inexplicable gaps in the image. We report three sets of novel observations on illusory contours. First, when an illusory square is superimposed on a checkerboard pattern there is a considerable enhancement of the contours so long as they are exactly coincident with the borders of the checks. If the checks are misaligned...

Equivalent representation of real and illusory contours in macaque V4.

The cortical processing of illusory contours provides a unique window for exploring the brain mechanisms underlying visual perception. Previous electrophysiological single-cell recordings demonstrate that a subgroup of cells in macaque V1 and V2 signal the presence of illusory contours, whereas recent human brain imaging studies reveal higher-order visual cortices playing a central role in illu...

Con-fusing contours & pieces of glass.

We present a new illusory display in which illusory contours are misaligned with physical contours. In these displays, illusory Kanizsa squares, induced by the so-called pacmen, are positioned on top of a background grid of bars. The misalignment of the illusory contours with respect to physical contours of the grid of bars induces an overall 'restless' appearance and evokes the impression that...

The representation of Kanizsa illusory contours in the monkey inferior temporal cortex.

Stimulus reduction is an effective way to study visual performance. Cues such as surface characteristics, colour and inner lines can be removed from stimuli, revealing how the change affects recognition and neural processing. An extreme reduction is the removal of the very stimulus, defining it with illusory lines. Perceived boundaries without physical differences between shape and background a...

Visual summation of luminance lines and illusory contours induced by pictorial, motion, and disparity cues

Illusory contours where no contrast exists in the image can be seen between pairs of spatially separate but aligned inducing real contours defined either by pictorial cues (luminance contrasts or offset gratings), kinetic contrast, or binocular disparity contrast. In previous studies it has been shown that the detection of a thin luminous line is facilitated when the line is superimposed on ill...

Curvature coding in illusory contours

We have employed the shape frequency and shape-amplitude after-effects (SFAE and SAAE) to investigate: (i) whether the shapes of illusory and real curves are processed by the same or different mechanisms, and (ii) the carrier-tuning properties of illusory curvature mechanisms. The SFAE and SAAE are the phenomena in which adaptation to a sinusoidal-shaped contour results in a shift in, respectiv...
